INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

I conduct individual therapy with children, adolescents and adults for many different reasons such as:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • PTSD

  • Grief

  • Loss

  • Retirement

WHAT TO EXPECT:

The first two or three sessions that I meet with people individually are dedicated to gather information such as the history and current nature of the problem/s and to develop a treatment plan. Therapy is then dedicated to help the individual understand the nature of the problem/s and to learn a variety of new more productive coping strategies to deal with the issues and also to learn how to get support from family and others in socially appropriate ways by improving communication and other interpersonal skills.

When I work with children (14 and under) also see the parents with the child and without the child to help with parenting issues, such as discipline, providing support and developing appropriate reward systems.

With adolescents, I work primarily individually and at times I see them together with their parents to reach agreements, plan, improve communication. By law, children over 14 have the right to privacy and confidentiality and I do not discuss their issues with their parents without their consent or presence.

If parents need to talk about the adolescent, I will listen but will not provide additional information, so that I can maintain therapeutic relationship.

The exception to confidentiality is if a child reports any type of child abuse, has a serious preoccupation and/or plan to commit suicide, or serious plan/preoccupation with homicide or wanting to hurt someone.
